Listing Your Marketing Potential

by Deborah Clark

On-line writing lists are wonderful things. I know. I belong to several. Each one offers different strengths, but they all have one thing in common. Each group offers insights, support and new markets to the other writers on the list. A quick search at tile.net, , yielded more than 200 writing related listservs. There is an on-line group available for every writer’s interests.

Most lists have writers in every stage of career development, from neophytes to seasoned, published professionals. Regardless of background, writers submit work, offer critiques and learn about the business of writing and publishing. As we learn from other list members, our skills are honed and our self-confidence increases. In my case, having others point out the areas I have consistent problems with has made me more aware of them. As a result, I watch for, and correct them, before they sneak back into my writing. My writing has become stronger because of my participation in my on-line groups.

It is the willingness of the writers on the lists to share their successes and frustrations with editors and publishers that makes on-line writing groups productive. As my writing has become stronger, I have become more self-confident about my talents and ability. This, in turn, has helped me to contact more lucrative and prestigious markets with an air of professionalism.

I, like many beginning writers, often wrote, and occasionally still do write, for publications that offer little more than tearsheets or a few pennies a word or dollars a page. As I gathered tearsheets, I gathered courage. If the smaller magazines and newspapers liked my work, maybe some of the bigger, glossier magazines would, too.

I used my on-line group to sound out my writing for potential markets. I still do. The group’s honesty and insight have tightened up my writing, thoughts and their presentation. Like many other list members, I have submitted query letters, articles, and even resumes fro critiques. Also, like other members, I have offered insights and concrete information about specific markets and editors. When I find a market I think is particularly appropriate for another list member, I will post that, too.

Some lists post member successes, have newsletters, challenges or contests. They inspire the members to achieve. I use the contests as an opportunity to better my best effort. Many challenges encourage me to extend my boundaries and reach beyond my comfort zone. The newsletters inform me of interesting ideas for my writing and career. It is the successes of each of my fellow members that inspires me. One of my lists asks each success be posted to the list. Many other members reply privately with personal congratulations. It is a good feeling when other are happy for you. The most positive aspect of the posting successes is the opportunity other writers have to access the markets because its URL, address or email is also listed in the posting.

All lists are different. Finding the right list can be a time intensive undertaking. Just keep in mind what you want to get out of belonging to the list. Don’t be afraid to sign off a list if it doe not meet your expectations. There is one list out on the Web that will suit your needs. Once you find it, you will find your writing becoming stronger and more salable. And, after all, isn’t that what we, as writers, are looking for?
